Tanjore god paintings originated from the town Thanjavur in South India where art and culture got patronage for a long period of time. They date back to the 16th century and are unique due to their bright color, complex patterns, inclusion of glossy golden foil as well as dazzling diamond dust. These unique characteristics come together to establish a distinct aura for Tanjore God paintings, which are easily recognized and hugely popular.
The greatness of Tanjore God paintings is in the way they portray Gods from Hindu mythology. Here you will observe figures such as Lord Krishna, Shiva, Durga, and Lakshmi depicted with great detail. The artists put a tremendous effort to reflect not only the halo around these gods but also their divine nature. The outcome is remarkable paintings that evoke a sense of grandeur and are in turn inspiring. Though the themes are alike in many different paintings, each artist chips into every stroke or a bit of gilt to ensure no two Tanjore God paintings are the same.
The materials used in making Tanjore God paintings are very important for making them look great and last a long time. Normally, craftsmen make these paintings on strong wooden panels, giving a solid base for their detailed designs and decorations. The wood is carefully treated and covered with a mix of chalk powder and glue. This creates a smooth surface for artists to show off their skills. This ensures the painting stays in good shape and doesn't wear out over time. Also, real gold foil is used to make the artwork look rich and magnificent. It catches people's attention with its visual beauty.
Apart from using wooden panels and gold foil, artists use a wide range of bright colors to make Tanjore God paintings. These colors are carefully made using natural pigments from different sources like minerals, plants, and even precious gemstones. The artists choose vibrant shades like reds, blues, yellows, and greens with care. They realistically show the Gods while also giving a sense of divine energy and spirituality. Sometimes, artists add semi-precious stones like pearls or rubies to highlight certain parts of the painting. It creates depth and texture that makes the artwork even more appealing. In general, by choosing materials carefully and using skilled techniques, Tanjore God paintings get a timeless charm. Besides, they last a long time, making them valuable pieces of art.
Using gold foil is a special technique in making real Tanjore God paintings. It adds a touch of richness and brightness to the artwork, making it really beautiful. Craftsmen carefully put the gold foil on specific parts of the painting. They use it generally on Gods' jewelry and clothes, making them look grand and divine. With skilled hands, they make sure it looks perfect, reflecting light in amazing ways and creating a 3D effect that amazes people. These gold decorations not only show great craftsmanship but also represent the divine nature of the godly images.
Another technique often used in making Tanjore God paintings is detailed embossing or relief work. After outlining the main figures and elements on the canvas, craftsmen add layers of plaster of Paris or white clay to create raised textures. These contours surprise viewers with their depth and dimension. This careful process brings the deities and other elements on the canvas to life, making them seem almost real. The raised areas are then decorated with bright colors, gemstones, and mirrors. This creates a burst of rich visual experiences that leave your senses amazed and captivated.
Symbols and pictures in Tanjore God paintings have a lot of power, giving them a deep meaning and making them really meaningful. Every part carefully added to these paintings is chosen with thought. They try to express certain messages that bring out strong feelings. The images of different Gods and Goddesses in these artworks have a detailed religious meaning. They show their divine qualities and the good values they represent. For instance, Lord Ganesha is often shown with an elephant head, which is a symbol of wisdom, intelligence, and good luck. Similarly interesting are the many arms of deities like Goddess Durga. They are symbols of their power and their amazing ability to do lots of different things.
The vibrant colors in Tanjore god paintings carry special meanings. Gold is important in these artworks as it represents purity, divinity, and prosperity, creating a sense of awe. Adorning with gold foil and delicate gold leaf accents makes the paintings visually appealing and creates a feeling of wonder. Another interesting aspect is the use of red, which represents power, passion, and strong emotions. Blue tones signify spirituality mixed with divine energy. When these colors are skillfully combined with brushstrokes or other artistic tools, the result is a captivating visual story. It takes viewers into realms deeply soaked in spirituality and devotion.
Exploring the details in Tanjore God paintings invites us to dive into the fascinating world of symbols and meanings. These artworks stand out because of their use of bright colors, detailed decorations, and careful artistry.
Another interesting aspect of Tanjore God paintings is how they carefully show the jewelry and accessories worn by divine beings. These ornaments, often decorated with valuable gemstones, are made with a lot of attention to detail. From fancy necklaces to detailed crowns and arm bracelets, every part of these decorations is crafted with careful care to represent the richness and divine splendor connected to the gods. After the fall of the Maratha rule in the region, the Britishers came to Thanjavur and extensively patronized Thanjavur painting and its artists. Britishers installed their garrison in the city and created their army base in Thanjavur in 1773. Since then, the Tanjore painting artisan has crafted several paintings for British personnel throughout the 19th century.

The temple houses paintings of the Chola dynasty from the 11th century, along with paintings from the Nayaka period of the 16th century. The Chola dynasty paintings were superimposed on Nayaka paintings in many places. During the rule of the Maratha empire in the region, Thanjavur painting artists were immensely influenced by the Maratha artisans who used precious gems, stones, and gold foils in their paintings. Thanjavur artisans used the newly acquired painting technique to craft several paintings on the temple's walls. These paintings are still decorating the temples' walls and are of great interest to tourists and historians. Recently, a new set of Chola paintings was discovered inside the temple. These paintings were found on the walls of secret corridors within the temple. The passage connects the temple with RajaRaja Chola.

Denmark's King Christian IV received permission to build fort Dansborg at Tharangambadi, Tamil Nadu. This relationship between Denmark and Thanjavur resulted in a collection of vast Thanjavur art in the Danish National Museum. The museum houses two antique Tanjore paintings of Serfoji II, the Maratha ruler.
Tanjore painting has a special place in Indian art history, and the painting style has been around for more than five centuries. Although the artform underwent several changes, the basic technique remained the same. The painting style has stood through times, and we can still find paintings decorating the walls and ceilings of temples and museums across the country and the world.
Apart from the above lists of places hosting antique Tanjore paintings, several other historical sites like South Indian temples and forts still have faint traces of Tanjore paintings. One such example is the Thiruvaiyaru Chatram constructed by Serfoji II after he returned from Kashi. The walls of this building hold traces of Maratha-style Tanjore paintings crafted using glass beads and semi-precious gems and stones.
Several other buildings in and around Thanjavur have Tanjore paintings on their walls and ceilings. However, most of these are deteriorating and disappearing due to negligence and vandalism. Many private collectors and museums also possess antique collections of Tanjore paintings.

]]>The Tanjore temple painting style of art first appeared in Thanjavur, the former capital of the Chola Empire. It now has a distinctive appearance that is enhanced with intricate architectural details and vibrant colors, influenced by the imperial era's murals.
The distinct Thanjavur or Tanjore temple painting style that is so well-known today is known to have flourished in Thanjavur's Maratha court between the 17th and 19th centuries. The Maratha people of India, who had been practicing painting for centuries, found new ways to depict the human body and naturalistic landscapes under the guidance of King Serfoji II, who played a particularly significant role in the development of this art form.
These Tanjore temple paintings offer an impression of the serenity and robustness of Puranic scenes. The attractive design and realistic illustrations in this collection set it apart. Throughout the Mughal era, the aesthetic underwent numerous changes. The nearly two centuries that the Marathas ruled Thanjavur saw a distinct style change in the paintings of the city.
Maratha artists decided to enhance the existing mural-based design with unique details showing exquisite craftsmanship. The gods have almond-shaped eyes, and the figures in the paintings are well-rounded. An arch, curtains, etc would be used to create a container to keep the figure inside. This folk art from India emphasizes ornaments, dresses, and other details with shimmering stones and gold leaves.
Some popular subjects in Tanjore paintings include Krishna, Balaji, Lakshmi, and Ganesha. Thanjavur is known for its beautiful and vividly colored paintings. The artwork's pronounced glow gives the impression of presence in a pitch-black room. While some Thanjavur paintings also use glass and walls, wooden canvases make up most of their surfaces.
The developed fashions hardly differed from one another. Tanjore put a lot of emphasis on gold ornaments and jewelry with gems. Vuyaioor placed a lot of value on the ornamental garland. Paintings with fine details from Mysore. Tanjore art was significantly influenced by establishing the British Garrison in Thanjavur in 1778.
Tanjore art is well known for its glossy finish and deep, flat colors. They also use a method called "gold foil," which entails manually sprinkling a layer of minuscule gold, bronze, or brass flakes on top of a painting.
For instance, semi-precious stones add light to the painting and highlight different elements. The image has a distinctive glow and enduring shine thanks to genuine Tanjore stones and 22-carat gold. Many independent artists are abandoning traditional Tanjore temple painting methods.
Tanjore paintings can be found in the market in four main categories. The problem is that they are all marketed and offered for sale as traditional Tanjore artwork.
The first category consists of traditional Thanjavur paintings created by Thanjavur traditional painters, either from the Raju and Naidu communities, whose ancestors were patrons of the great Nayak dynasty. These artists strictly adhere to conventional techniques and make use of conventional materials. Sadly, their higher costs prevent them from competing in the market, and younger generations are not pursuing this art. Thanjavur has a very small number of them left.
The second group of artists includes those who chose Tanjore painting as a career after spending some time learning from master craftsmen, whether they are second- or first-generation artists. These artists create Tanjore paintings that are classified as "commercial." Most of the time, they don't use conventional materials and are created much more quickly and cheaply.
The third category consists of independent artists who have completed a brief course (now mostly online) and primarily rely on social media for sales.
The final one is a collection of largely machine-made and imported "fake" Tanjore paintings.
The majority of Tanjore paintings on the market today are primarily "commercial" Tanjore paintings created to make money and satisfy consumer demands. These paintings can be made in a lot less time and with cheaper supplies. They might, however, appear very similar.
While the majority of commercial Tanjore paintings use 6mm–8mm plywood, traditional Tanjore paintings use hardwood. The price is cut in half by using plywood, but the canvas board's strength is decreased by a third. The durability of the canvas board directly affects the dependability of the gold relief work.
The preparation of the board with PVA wood glue, also known as "Fevicol," is another obvious difference. These boards can typically be created in a single day. Tamarind seed powder has been used in wooden canvas boards for centuries.
The type of materials used for relief work, also known as "mugh work," are another less obvious difference. Chalk powder and PVA wood glue, also known as "Fevicol," are frequently used in this type of work. Compared to clay relief work, easy and affordable to source.
Another significant variable that affects the price of Tanjore paintings is the quality of the gold. To create Tanjore paintings, artists can use 18K gold, 22K gold, silver with a gold coating, and imitation gold. The majority of consumers won't be able to distinguish between the two.
The artist's abilities, the beauty of the work, or the quality are additional factors that affect price. Traditional drawing techniques, such as smooth round figures, mudras, and almond-shaped eyes, must be used to depict the mudras (hand gestures), face, and especially the eyes.
When you want to alter a Tanjore painting to suit your tastes, the price can occasionally go up significantly. Particularly if you want to alter the composition or alter the size of these paintings. Most of the time, changes to the color scheme have no effect on prices.
The place where you purchase these paintings is ultimately the most crucial consideration. directly from the artist, via a website, a dealer, or through a gallery or showroom. The cost can vary by 10% to 50% depending on where you purchase it.
You should be able to estimate a Tanjore painting's value using the factors above when you visit a Tanjore Art Gallery. Sometimes figuring out how valuable a painting is can be difficult. Even with these factors to consider, knowing whether your painting is worth anything can be challenging.

In the 3rd millennium BC, the entire Indian subcontinent included the present-day countries, including Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, and a section of eastern Afghanistan. The various Indian traditional artwork has a strong sense of design, which is appreciated even in the modern era. Take, for example, the sculpture works. Sculpture work was primarily done on metals and stone. Several sculpture pieces that reflect Indian traditional artwork have stood the test of time, despite being exposed to a range of climatic conditions, which are still famous today. Also equally famous and talked about are the famous Indian paintings. Tanjore art, a part of the south Indian traditional paintings, is globally famous.
It is interesting to note that the ancient paintings' subject and theme were very minimal and basic. The ancient rock paintings and the murals are proof of this. However, during the Indus valley civilization, when the natives of the land were believed to have progressed leaps and bounds, Indian art forms and traditional Indian artwork also developed. Superior painting tools and techniques were developed and used. According to history records, the artists of the Indus valley civilization would paint what they saw. From landscapes to hunting parties to people dancing, sunrise and sunset, the artisans of the Indus valley civilization painted them all. It is believed that artists began painting and sculpting their deities during this time. Some of the famous Indian paintings date back to this bygone era.
In the eras that followed and in the contemporary era, Indian traditional artwork and the various Indian art forms drew influences from their region of origin and religion. This is precisely why famous Indian paintings can be classified based on the region from where they originated. Few of the famous Indian paintings do have religious influence.
Paintings hold a special place in Indian traditional artwork. The history of the different paintings is educational, and it makes an interesting read. Initially, the artists of the prehistoric era used tools that were available to them back then. Artists used tools like wooden sticks made of raw materials like tree branches. Additionally, bones and animal hair were also used to make paintbrushes. Paintings were done in caves then. Blood, charcoal mixed with oil, extracted from roots and leaves doubled up as paint.
As time progressed, so did the Indian traditional artwork, especially the traditional paintings of India. The paintings of the Mughal era were done on paper. Artists used fine paint brushes and pens. Pattachitra is a famous cloth-based scroll form of painting. Palm leaves were also used to paint. Images of gods and goddesses were painted on palm leaves. It required skilled hands to do so. Very fine paintbrushes and permanent colors were used.

The Madhubani traditional paintings of India originated from the Mithila region in Bihar, so the famous Indian paintings of this form are also known as Mithila paintings. The form of painting is still practiced in the pockets of Bihar.
A mention of south Indian traditional paintings is incomplete without describing the Tanjore paintings from the Tanjore art. Tanjore paintings have made it to the list of famous Indian paintings. These south Indian traditional paintings and the form of classical south Indian painting style are believed to have been inaugurated from the town of Thanjavur, which is known as Tanjore. The Indian traditional artwork thrived in 1600 AD when the Nayakas of Thanjavur were ruled by the Vijayanagara Rayas, who encouraged art, primarily classical dance and music, besides encouraging vernacular literature and paintings.
Bright, rich, vivid colors, simple iconic composition, glittering gold foils that are neatly placed on delicate but extensive gesso work and usage of glass beads and pieces or very rarely precious and semi-precious gems, a Tanjore painting has it all. In the ancient days, Tanjore art decorated the palaces of the kings, and in the modern-day, Tanjore south Indian traditional paintings can be found in the homes and offices of people.
In the past and even today, a Tanjore painting can be made in almost any size, depending on the choice of subject and patron.
Tanjore painting, a form of Tanjore art, is made on a canvas mounted on wood. The canvas is a cloth neatly mounted on a plank of wood. Special glue is used to keep together the wood and canvas.
Once the glue is dried, the painting is ready to be created. Next, the artist begins to trace the image on the canvas. A stencil is used for the process. A unique binding medium creates the gesso work after the subject(s) are drawn on the canvas. Selected areas are highlighted using 22-carat gold foil. Precious and semi-precious stones are also used. Tanjore paintings always use bright hues.

During this period, Rayas encouraged various forms of classical art, including dance, painting, music, and literature. However, the painting style as we know it today is highly influenced by the Maratha court of Thanjavur. In 2007-2008, the Government of India recognized Tanjore Painting as a Geographical Indication. The skilled artisans use this painting style to paint the portraits of Hindu gods and goddesses in different postures.
The Thanjavur city of Tamil Nadu has contributed a lot to the history of Indian art. The city has been the heart of art and architecture for centuries. Thanjavur was the capital of the Chola dynasty from the 9th to the 13th century, and during this period, Thanjavur reached new heights in art and architecture. The Brihadeesvara temple is the symbol of this period and houses several wall paintings from the Chola Empire and Nayaka period.
The roots of Tanjore Paintings are also linked to Thanjavur. The painting style originated and flourished here in the 16th and 17th centuries. The origin of this classical painting style is linked to the Vijayanagara Empire (1336 A.D. to 1646 A.D.), including the areas of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh. The rulers of Vijayanagara were patrons of art and culture. The roots of this South Indian art form are linked to the Mural art of the Vijayanagara Empire.
Tanjore Painting was first used for decorating the doors and walls of homes, palaces, and temples in Thanjavur. The interior walls of the palaces were also painted with depictions of various events like a coronation, battle victories, and other achievements of the rulers. In contrast, the walls of temples and homes were decorated with murals and paintings involving religious themes and portraits of various Hindu deities.
The remains of these ancient wall paintings are still present on the walls of Virupaksha Temple in Hampi, the capital city of Vijayanagara Empire, Varadaraja Temple, Kamakshi Temple in Kanchipuram, and Lepakshi Temple in Andhra Pradesh. Some of these paintings are also present in the Brihadeeswara Temple’s gopuram of Periya Kovil in Thanjavur.
During the reign of Vijayanagara, the Rayas of Vijayanagara administered the kingdom through Nayaka governors. These governors also administered the outlying states under the supervision of the Raya of Vijayanagara. During the reign of Achyutappa (1564-1614), the Vijayanagara empire fell, and several philosophers, artists, musicians, and litterateurs migrated to Thanjavur, Madurai, and Mysore. Raghunatha Nayaka, the son and successor of Achyutappa, was the most successful Nayaka ruler and patron of art and artists. He established a unique school for Thanjavur artists, who later evolved the Tanjore Painting style during the reign of Marathas.
In 1676, Thanjavur was captured by Ekoji, the half-brother of Chatrapati Shivaji, on behalf of Adil Shah of Bijapur and established the Maratha rule in the region. The Maratha rulers were great patrons of art and artists. During the reign of Serfoji II in Thanjavur, the Thanjavur painting style flourished into its current form.
The royal Maratha artisans induced innovation into the traditional Tanjore Painting style to make it more royal and astonishing. They introduced ornamentation of Tanjore Paintings by using gesso work, glass beads, precious and semi-precious gems, and gold foil to bring out the glow. Maratha artisans also introduced the reverse class painting technique into the Tanjore Painting style. Serfoji II’s reign was when Tanjore Painting and other art forms underwent innovation and greatly flourished.
After the Maratha rule ended with the death of the last Maratha ruler – Shivaji II, the Britishers annexed the state of Thanjavur. The mercantile Chettiars patronized the art form in Thanjavur and around South India.
Being Shaivites, the Chettiar community encouraged Tanjore Painting with Shaivite themes. The monastery in Koviloor, Tamil Nadu, has a huge Tanjore Painting depicting the lives of all 63 Shaivaite Saints or Nayanmars and 64 miracles of Lord Shiva (Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam). Thanjavur’s Bhimarajagoswami monastery has a large Tanjore Painting of 108 temples of Lord Vishnu. Britishers who came to the city of Thanjavur also patronized the South Indian art forms and encouraged Tanjore Painting style.
Even after the end of the Maratha Empire and the overpowering of the East India Company, the South Indian art form received huge popularity. After the wake of the Mysore wars in 1767-1799, the East India Company settled in the state of Thanjavur and greatly patronized the Tanjore Painting style.
Later in 1773, when the East India Company installed its military base in the city for British troops, the skilled Tanjore artisans illustrated their art for British personnel. The painting style appealed to British taste and sensibility. The Britishers inclined toward the South Indian art form and encouraged Indian artisans to portray different scenes of Indian festivals, rituals, flora, and fauna in Tanjore paintings.
Charles Gold, the British chronicler, mentioned in his Book “Oriental Drawings” that ‘the Artists of India or Moochys’ painted Tanjore paintings. The Raju community of Tiruchi and Thanjavur, also known as Chtragara or Jinigara, and the Naidu community of Madurai executed the Thanjavur painting style. The Rajus and Naidus were basically Tamil-speaking people from Rayalseema of Andhra Pradesh. These artisans migrated to Thanjavur, Madurai, and Mysore during the fall of the Vijayanagara empire and the rise of Nayaka’s rule in Thanjavur and Madurai. The art form was carried out by the artisans who migrated to Thanjavur and Madurai, and the art form was patronized by Nayakas and the royal Maratha artists who added their innovation into the art form to enhance it.
The skilled Tanjore Painting artisans used to portray this art form on different subjects and themes as required by the patrons, their interests, and financial capacity. They performed the art as a sacred task with ritual purity and humility. Most of these artisans remained anonymous and never signed their art.
The artisans who migrated to Mysore created a similar painting style called Mysore painting. The Mysore painting style is very similar to the Tanjore painting. As the origin of both the South Indian art forms was the same, the subject and themes of these painting styles remained the same. Artists used the art form to portray various deities of Hindu mythology. The main difference between the Tanjore and the Mysore painting styles were:
While originating from the same place, both painting styles have developed to be very different from each other, and one can clearly differentiate between the two painting styles.
Tanjore Painting style is one of the oldest South Indian art forms that still exist. These paintings were made with humility, ritual purity, and devotion. Mostly, the subjects of these paintings are associated with Hindu Gods and Goddesses. The art form has stood against the test of times through history and went through several innovations. The reason it survived through centuries is the adaptability of the painting style to change the format. Even today, Tanjore Paintings still have a broad appeal. The artists have kept the traditional practices and techniques alive.
